Odyssey Wellness Tattoo

I met Darlene in a business development workshop many years ago and was struck by the unique mixture of compassionate healthcare professional and rebellious tattoo artist. I liked her immediately.

Darlene had recently begun to expand her Boston-area studio to accommodate a growing demand for reconstructive tattooing, which she had been practicing for several years. Darlene’s specialty is restorative and artistic tattoo services for women recovering from reconstructive breast surgery and she needed a redesigned website that could better market her services and communicate her philosophy of women’s healthcare.

Odyssey’s branding was already established, with a beautiful brushstroke logo, and Darlene had an enormous cache of images for her portfolio, most of which existed on her Instagram account. I saw my job primarily to provide a simple and elegant framework upon which Darlene’s work could shine and a website that could expand and adapt as her business grew.

I don’t normally recommend an mostly-black site with light text but the nature of Darlene’s work, along with the aesthetic tastes of her clientele, convinced me that it was the appropriate design choice. Because Odyssey had grown to include women’s restorative tattooing as well as trans health tattooing and microblading I built a Services section to accommodate separate areas for each service with the ability to expand. I kept the image galleries simple, optimizing Darlene’s photographs so they could be displayed as large as possible but with small file sizes for fast page load times.

Since the new website has launched, Darlene has provided me with an growing wishlist of new content and new features. I imagine Odyssey Wellness Tattoo will continue to be a work in progress, which is a perfect fit for Darlene who is also in constant motion and looking for new opportunities to serve her clients. I’m honored to have been part of this website redesign and grateful to know compassionate, rebellious artists like Darlene.
